Assessment and possibilities for improving the quality of prison life of prisoners in the Republic of Serbia: Criminological-penological, psychological, sociological, legal and security aspects - PrisonLIFE.
[Study]
Study description
The subject of this study is the quality of prison life in the Republic of Serbia, as one of the most contemporary concepts in prison research, distinct and unique within each prison system, and insufficiently recognised within the Serbian penal system, as well as in criminological, penological, and sociological research.
The main thematic issue focuses on determining the quality of prison life in Serbian prisons. This exploratory and comparative research is centered on the differences related to the sociodemographic, criminological, and penological characteristics of convicted individuals and examining their relationship with various subjective indicators, along with assessing possibilities for its improvement, with special attention to criminological-penological, psychological, sociological, legal, and security aspects. Four primary project goals are set.
1. To conduct a cultural adaptation and develop a Serbian-language version of the questionnaire for assessing the quality of prison life, based on the original English version titled Measuring the Quality of Prison Life (MQPL) survey, authored by Liebling, Hulley, and Crew (2011).
2. To conduct an evaluation and validation of the MQPL questionnaire in Serbian and determine its psychometric characteristics.
3. To determine the quality of prison life in Serbian prisons through an exploratory and comparative study, focusing on differences related to sociodemographic, criminological, and penological characteristics, and through examining its relationship with subjective well-being, different personality traits, and levels of aggression and depression.
4. To assess the possibilities for improving the quality of prison life for the convicted population in Serbia from criminological-penological, psychological, sociological, legal, and security perspectives, and to provide empirically and theoretically grounded recommendations for future public policy, with special attention to the female inmate population.

During the project, adult convicted individuals of both genders who have been legally sentenced, have voluntarily agreed to participate in the research, are serving a prison sentence longer than 30 days, and who understand, speak, read, and write Serbian were included in research. Adult convicted individuals of both genders who have not been legally sentenced, who have not voluntarily agreed to participate in the research, who do not understand, speak, read, or write Serbian, and who at the time of data collection were placed in the reception unit or center of the penitentiary institution were excluded from the research.
The research instruments used for data collection were closed (referring to a survey where all respondents answer the same questions, likely with predetermined response options) and semi-closed. A repeated cross-section study was conducted on two occasions. A reduced set of data (MQPL) was collected from a smaller number of respondents for retesting after an average of six weeks. For the purpose of data collection, participants were invited to voluntarily participate in the research through an announcement that was available on the institution's notice board (Call for Participation in the Research). This step was preceded by obtaining approval from the Administration for the Execution of Criminal Sanctions and an agreement on the scheduling of the research and data collection with the directors of the mentioned penitentiary institutions and their professional service.
The data was collected by phd Milena Milicevic, from the Institute for Criminological and Sociological Research. |
