Study description

The subject of this study is the quality of prison life in the Republic of Serbia, as one of the most contemporary concepts in prison research, distinct and unique within each prison system, and insufficiently recognised within the Serbian penal system, as well as in criminological, penological, and sociological research. The main thematic issue focuses on determining the quality of prison life in Serbian prisons. This exploratory and comparative research is centered on the differences related to the sociodemographic, criminological, and penological characteristics of convicted individuals and examining their relationship with various subjective indicators, along with assessing possibilities for its improvement, with special attention to criminological-penological, psychological, sociological, legal, and security aspects. Four primary project goals are set. 1. To conduct a cultural adaptation and develop a Serbian-language version of the questionnaire for assessing the quality of prison life, based on the original English version titled Measuring the Quality of Prison Life (MQPL) survey, authored by Liebling, Hulley, and Crew (2011). 2. To conduct an evaluation and validation of the MQPL questionnaire in Serbian and determine its psychometric characteristics. 3. To determine the quality of prison life in Serbian prisons through an exploratory and comparative study, focusing on differences related to sociodemographic, criminological, and penological characteristics, and through examining its relationship with subjective well-being, different personality traits, and levels of aggression and depression. 4. To assess the possibilities for improving the quality of prison life for the convicted population in Serbia from criminological-penological, psychological, sociological, legal, and security perspectives, and to provide empirically and theoretically grounded recommendations for future public policy, with special attention to the female inmate population.
