[Study]
Study description
In the Western Balkan countries, Europeanization is seen either narrowly as the formal process of accession or, more often, in a broader terms, as a multidimensional process encompassing almost all aspects of the political, social, economic and even cultural transition. It is regarded to be the top most political process on which the future and prosperity of all the countries depends. However, after the rising of Europhilia in the first phases of accession, the popular support for EU integration and related reforms is declining, more in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, less in Macedonia and to even lesser degree in Montenegro. In order to expand and deepen the existing body of research, this project aimed to provide in-depth analyses of country specific mediated Europeanization discourses, and to provide comparative insights using the historical connectedness of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia, and the inter-connection of their media systems as a starting point. The main objective of the research was to analyze, deconstruct and identify characteristics of the discourses about Europeanization in the Western Balkan media – the media from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia, as well as to examine to what extent mediated representations of the relations between the EU/Europe and the Western Balkan countries foster deliberation and dialogue about the EU integrations.
